MEET CAROLINE GUTMAN
CO-FOUNDER & CEO, NU MARKET
A photojournalist who speaks several languages, Caroline launched her company to expand market access for women artisans around the world.
A PURPOSE-DRIVEN VISUAL STORYTELLER
Caroline is a photographer whose work has been featured by the South China Morning Post, CNN, Vice, National Geographic EDU, and other publications. She is a member of Women Photograph and was named one of 30 under 30 Women Photographers by Photoboite in 2017.
She earned a BA degree in Chinese Language & Literature and Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis and a MSc degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
As a Fulbright Scholar with camera in hand, Caroline interviewed and photographed Yi and Miao women artisans in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces of China. The stories she captured would become a catalyst for her next professional endeavor. Over the course of that year, she came to appreciate how the businesses run by women artisans contribute to regional economic development and advance gender equality. But she also knew that their market reach was limited. To help these talented women reach consumers with their craft, she launched the social enterprise Nu Market.
BUILDING MARKET ACCESS TO ADVANCE GENDER EQUITY
Now, Caroline joins the Milestone Makers cohort as the co-founder and CEO of Nu Market.
Nu Market expands women artisans' market access by partnering with brands to incorporate hand-crafted textiles into a variety of products. They've also created their own line of elegant handbags that highlight traditional textiles. In addition to expanding women artisans' market access, 20% of Nu Market's profits fund women's literacy education and business training in partner communities.
